I am passionate about the provision of basic services in an equitable and sustainable manner. This passion started during my postgraduate research on informal settlements and continued through my career as a civil engineer, designing and constructing municipal services. For the past 15 years, I have been working in public policy, recognising that policy, institutions and finance have a higher-level impact on service delivery than technical design.
I have an undergraduate degree in civil engineering and master’s degrees in urban engineering, geography and environmental policy from the University of Cape Town, South Africa and Oxford University, UK. I am a registered professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
